Is Invisalign Right for Me?

Candidates for Invisalign

Invisalign is a great method of orthodontic correction that gives patients the ability to straighten their teeth with a virtually invisible treatment. If you can commit to wearing aligners for 20-22 hours a day, you're a good candidate for treatment! It is just the simple. Dr. Mindy finds this appliance is especially beloved by adults and teens who want to avoid the appearance of traditional braces and continue their active lifestyles during orthodontic treatment. That being said, Dr. Mindy typically recommends Invisalign for athletes, band members, or vocalists who would be somewhat inconvenienced by traditional metal braces.

What to Expect

The Invisalign Process

Once your custom aligners are made, you will wear them for about 20-22 hours per day. Ideally, you should be removing your aligners only to eat and drink (except for water) and to brush and floss your teeth. It’s important to wear them consistently to ensure that your treatment proceeds according to plan. If you do not wear your aligners for at least 20 hours each day, your treatment will fall behind.

Every week, you’ll switch to a new aligner. When you switch to a new set, you can expect some tenderness in your teeth as they adjust. About every 6-10 weeks, you will come back into Mansfield Orthodontics for a brief exam and adjustment with Dr. Mindy. She will make sure your treatment is progressing properly and provide you with your next several sets of aligners.

For most patients, treatment involves two series. Series 1 involves the bulk of correction and movement. Series 2 (if needed) will complete all the nuances that turn a good smile into an amazing one.

What’s the Difference?

Invisalign vs. Braces

Both Invisalign and braces are great ways to straighten your teeth and get a better smile. One of the biggest factors in determining which option is better for you is the severity of your orthodontic issues.

If you have only minor to moderate orthodontic problems, Invisalign will likely be a better option for you. It can quickly correct minor bite problems and issues like gaps in your smile. However, Invisalign can’t be used to treat more complex dental issues like serious overbites and extremely crowded, crooked, or rotated teeth. If you suffer from these issues, traditional braces will be a better option.

Invisalign is also usually more comfortable than traditional metal braces as they exert gentle, even pressure on your teeth and there are no wires or brackets to irritate your mouth. If you do choose Invisalign for your orthodontic treatment, it is highly important that you follow Dr. Mindy’s instructions as wearing your aligners improperly or infrequently can prolong your treatment time and affect your results.
